Hi
Im thinking about coming to Vancouver on a working holiday visa and was wondering what the esl market is like there.
I have experience teaching in Korea and Japan, and have a BA degree, but dont have any teaching qualifications. Any chance of getting a job??
Cheers |

You will need a TEFL certificate to work at even a lousy-mediocre school. Everyone has a BA and experience these days. Good luck. Try to find a job that pays over $20/hr.
There are tons of schools BTW. |

Decent full-time work is almost non-existent. You can find part-time gigs and work maybe 20 hours per week for $18-$22 per hour.
Good luck living in Vancouver on a salary of $400 per week... |

Try checking into Victoria, just a ferry-ride away from Vancouver. A bit lower cost of living and from what I've seen here in Mexico, there are some language schools there that bring in foreign students. Pan-Pacific is one I know of. |

No. I lived in Victoria from '84 until '03. Victoria is significantly more expensive than Vancouver. For example, rents for comparable apartments might be $50-$100 more per month. Costs for groceries and other items are about 5%-10% more than the mainland, due to the extra costs of being brought over on the ferries. |

So you guys are saying that there are tons of private language schools in Canada? Or are you talkling about universities? I thought the government handled most ESL stuff, which would squeeze ESL entrepreneurs out of the market. |

It is? I saw rental prices that were several hundred dollars less than Vancouver, though I only saw prices downtown Vancouver and around King St. I must have been lucky or looking in the wrong places. Disregard my earlier vote for Vicky. |

What about getting a couple of different jobs, such as at a language school and tutoring part time outside of that? The schedule might not be great, but it should be possible to get up to 30 hours or so that way.
Does anyone know of a website for esl jobs in Vancouver? |

There are quite a few private language schools in Canada, yes. There are also ESL programs in many universities and even some private high schools. The gov't offers free ESL lessons to immigrants only as far as I have heard. That leaves the market open for non-immigrants wanting to simply learn some English and/or study at a Canadian high school or university. I attended some recruitment fairs in Asia last fall and I have to say that the interest in studying English in Canada (for a few months or a few years) is definitely quite high at the moment. |

I've seen quite a few websites about people (or "companies") that will host a foreign student for x amount of months for $2,000 and up. Not sure this would be a lucrative business where I am (there's nothing to do), but I suppose you Canadians may have a better shot at something like this.
I knew a Canadian lady nearing retirement who needed the extra cash, and now she lives quite comfortably hosting foreign students. I think she has to pay recruiters in China or something...not sure how one would set that up. |

Jobs are often advertised in the classifieds of the www.vancouversun.com .
However it's better to find the schools in the yellow pages at www.mytelus.com and then contact them. Summer is the high season and it's easy to find work then, but outside of that it's every man for himself. Maybe you could teach English in the summer and work in Whistler in the winter or something.
Victoria is a lovely city, but I've heard the job market there is a lot tighter than in Vancouver - there are some schools, but nothing like the 100 or so in Vancouver. |

Sharing an apartment, its not that bad if you aren't agoraphobic. |

Let's see, two roommates. For $700 per month, you'd be lucky to get a one-bedroom, so if you're sharing with a significant other that's fine, but otherwise someone gets to sleep on the coach.
I suppose a larger group of people could rent a cheap house for $350 each, but as you say, that's not for people who are agoraphobic or simply don't want to put up with the hassle and BS of roommates. |
