I'm planning a short trip for my 1-week break in August. I'd like to visit a colder place in Japan (I live in the Nagoya area). I thought about Sapporo.

For those of you who know Japan a little more than I do, is there anywhere you'd recommend (colder the better). I'm also on a budget and thinking about taking the car and tent.

I had a good time in Kiyosato, which is in Yamanashi ken, just next to Nagano ken. I stayed at a B&B and didn`t need an air conditioner in August.

hokkaido is really humid in summer. especially the central area, and sapporo could be in the 30s. be careful about it if you want cold. the eastern part, shiretoko, is always cool i heard and has reputedly awesome camping and bears and extremely rustic. but its a day from sapporo by train unless you fly to kushiro.

I went camping for two obon vacations in Kamicochi national park in Nagano-ken. The weather was great--very cool--but bring bug repellent! They are blood suckers!

Scot has been getting his info on sapporo from Tokyoites, I think.

sort of like asking some teen in the bronx NYC about Alaska cos its in his country. I had Tokyo people ask me if they can fish and hook salmon from sapporo hotel windows. so i say, "sure, if you can pull it in before the bears down on the pavement grab it.

but hey Scot U R right that central Hokk is humid... by Canadian if not Jpn standards and that Shiretoko is dry and always cool in the evenings and full of fun people in summer. Rausu town sites were wall to wall tents, but surronded by green and free rotenburo springs. people get their by 2 wheels normally from Kushiro. Tokachigawa Onsen area, the Taizetsu Mtns , Furano
etc. are also cool and more accessible.
sapporo rarely gets over 25 degrees. how else could they have a national level marathon at noon during August?

for Hakuba in J Alps, i advise
Hokkaido no tokibi - tomorokoshi - namara oishi beya!! (a little dialect to make you Southeners laugh)
