Since there are almost no full-time jobs with benefits in North America (except in public schools), why get a degree in TESL? Most of us in the profession have had to fight and scratch for the full-time positions that are left. Do you agree?

Yes. But it might be a good combination with a teacher's certification, no?

Are you talking about a BA or an MA? If you go for your Master's, you'll have a much better chance of getting a Uni job (why would anyone want to work in a public school anyway?). If nothing else, you would get better jobs abroad, with fewer hours and better pay.

If you don't get an MA, you can hang it up as far as the "coveted" jobs are concerned. IMO, there are plenty of jobs out there, if you're willing to relocate.

ESL teachers are the second most needed teachers in the province of Quebec. There are approximately 150 openings for ESL teachers in the province right now, with approximately 650 positions opening this September. Many school boards are hiring francophones to do the job, as well as people without B.Eds because there aren't enough qualified ESL teachers around.

Something off-topic, but would you happen to know about need for Spanish-teachers in Quebec? A Mexican teacher asked me the other day.

I can tell you this, Guy--

If someone is fluent in Spanish AND English, ESL-teaching opportunities are nearly endless here in the States (albeit, the majority of which are in public schools and adult ed centers).

Thanks, I'll mention that to the teacher. He's big on going to Kanada, but if there are opportunities, I'm sure he'd look into alternate ways over the wall.

What are these Quebec opportunities? Where do you find them? Do you need to have a high level of French to teach in Quebec?

I always figured that you would need to be fluent in French to teach English in Quebec. Which is why I never looked at it, but I think that Quebec would be an awesome place to teach.

Where are those 650 openings for ESL teachers in Quebec? After reading your post I checked several job boards for Canada and also Quebec but I can't seem to find many job openings for Quebec.

Thanks Valley Girl for the link for jobs in Quebec.

Most of these jobs are in private schools with few benefits.

I am really interested in a position at a school. Perhaps chicmate can provide some info as to where I can find the openings in the regular school system.

If you want a job in the "regular school system", then it seems to me that you would want to contact the school board of your target region, no? Look for the HR section of the shool board's website for contact info.
