I placed a post a couple of days ago Living in Anyang City.
Got a couple general responsesseems no one has been there. May be I will get even less response to this enquire.

Has anyone taught at Anyang Normal University. In a former life it was called Anyang Teacher's College: believed it made the name change last year?

If anyone has taught or is teaching there I am interested in know what the school is like.

The Contract and Appendix Anyang Normal U offers excludes many of the extras that are standard at other schools: Internet connection in apartment, gas, electricity and telephone. If you need a bicycle again the teacher pays.
Is not this rather unusual?

Also, Anyang U has a Breach Penalty clause that has a maximum fine of $2,000US.
"When either of the two parties fails to fulfill the contract...it must pay a breach penalty of US $500 to 2,000(or the equivalent in RMB)."
$2,000US is something like $16,000RMB or 3-months salary.
Are they serious?

Anyang U seems unwilling to budge on the amenities and I have not got a straight answer on the Breach Penalty.

This is my first Chinese Contract. Any advice?

If there's a problem tell them to step outside and give em a bit of strong arm.

I am a bit worried about this kung fu stuff

Do these chinese dudes do kung fu or is that just some stuff on TV?

Bill

Two very important points when considering any employment contract in China.

1. personal priorities

2. overall package

Im with my third employer; none have provided me with a bike. A basic bike can be purchased for around 150RMB to 200RMB; a cost of 15RMB to 20RMB per month over a 10 month contract, big deal! My 2 other employers provided me with a drinking water dispensers; the current one did not. Bought my own for 90 RMB. Big deal!

Last year I earned 5,000RMB per month, income tax paid by my employer, and I got free local calls / elec / gas / water. This year I earn 7,000RMB. I pay a little over 300RMB tax. I pay my own local calls / elec / gas / water (which have ranged from a low of 140RMB to a high of 300RMB). Internet is provided free-of-charge but is too slow so I have my own ADSL line at a monthly cost of 130RMB. Even with all of the extra expenses, Im still better off than last year.

Whats your bottom line?

As for me, for 4,000 to 5,000 per month, I would want free utilities (actually, I wont work for less than 5,000).

And the penalty clause you mentioned is straight from the official Foreign Experts Bureau recommended / endorsed employment contract for foreigners. I believe many government schools use that contract. In the event of a breach, I dont know who is suppose to decide whether the penalty should be 500USD or 2,000USD.

I have read a few reports of foreign teachers voluntarily paying breach penalties, but the more popular course of action seems to be a midnight run.

Having just become a member, I have sent a reply to Bill 11. I have worked in Anyang before and find it an alright city to work in ,providing you make your own entertainment. The people are great and so is the food. The cost of living is lower than a lot of other places. I could survive on 500rmb per month and that included coffee and smokes.
