I'm on the bull's side here.

Nothing macho about the "sport," at all.

I attended a bullfight in Cancun many years ago. I just remember the ever-so sad eyes of the bull staring into the stands as if we could help him! I saw a bullfight in Managua, Nicaragua last year where they just chased the bull around for almost an hour until everyone was exhausted. And here in Ontario there's a "portuguese" style bullring where they place velcro on key places on the sides of the bull and velcro on the swords!

Speaking of "macho", Guy, do you ever get to the Lucha Libre matches in DF? Is it worth it as a cultural experience?

I've seen one bullfight and I sometimes catch the Sunday TV show that recaps fights. Like Dragonlady, I was very interested in the cultural aspect of it and spent a lot of time watching the crowd...it's certainly not a sport, but more of a show. Diet-bravery.

Lucha Libre never interested me until my brother-in-law suggested recently that we go see it one day, which I've yet to do. I imagine it would be a lot of stupid fun and worth a roll of film.

Bull fighting is illegal in the state of Oaxaca, here they perfer to ride 'em, and in this situation, its the riders or specators who like to get in the ring with em Surprised Who end up being killed!

"los torros" are always part of any town's fiesta, and they say the fiesta was good if someone died!. They talk about it for years, decades really, "no fiesta's been as good as 1954, six were killed that year" Razz

I remember that Mexico passed a law against animal cruelty a few years back. The law was quite specific on banning or advising on certain methods and tools used to slaughter animals. The law was primarily aimed at the farming sector, but directly affected dogfighting, c0ckfighting (both already illegal-but tolerated) and bullfighting. Bullfighting must have gained some kind of exception.

Hmmmmmm. I'm going up to Aguascalientes (and may even end up working there) where-according to the official promo. literature- they have a month long feria pretty much based around cock-fighting and bull-fighting. I was surprised to see cock-fighting so blatantly advertised - perhaps they're not allowed to put razor blades on the legs of the gallos. A guy in Ecuador told me that makes it pretty boring.
Is it true, by the way, that they call people from Aguascalientes "hidrocAlidos"? That's not an insulting term, is it?

This is only really a guess, since I hadn't heard that term before, but I'd say yes, it's probably offensive. A favorite passtime of Mexicans is insulting people from other parts of the country. I once asked a friend what you call people from Monterrey, Monteriquense? Monterrican? Monterrano? She immediately said, tacao (stingy).

I've been wondering for a while what a person from Guadalajara is called? Guadalajican? Guadalajeco?

Tapatio, or some variation of that spelling. Tapatillo?
