I am currently at a school in Bangbon near Bangkok and the area is dead. Nothing to do and the foreign teachers at my school do not get along well with the Thai staff. There seems to be alot of racism here. Is there another place someone can suggest that would be better?
Maybe near a beach perhaps? That's not dead quiet, where they actually like foreigners?
Your help is appreciated. |

This is a frequent question on some of the boards.
There is no clear answer, it depends what you want.
I knew someone who taught down near Rayong, very nice etc. but not much to do socially.
Pattaya or nearby may have jobs, but enuf said.
I once got a job in Phuket, but I didn't stay because I don't like Phuket. You can go even more south, of course, for the beaches, but places like Hat Yai/Songhkla may bore you.
I don't know the Hua Hin area, but it's not too far from BKK. An old friend says that it is very nice down there.....but I don't see many jobs come up.
If you want a place with coconut palms, clean seas, great social life, beautiful girls or boys eyeing u up on the beach, a cushy job in a great school, cheap beer, friendly Thais, many doting farang pals, a wide variety of cheap delicious food, a huge salary and a Merc 200 SLK.......please let me know where it is, and I will be there the same day!
Honestly, I am not being deliberately sarcastic....I once asked your question myself....
Maybe u should look at certain bits of Bali, or other places?
Good luck

Thais in general are a pretty xenophobic lot at heart, so I doubt you'll find anywhere that foreigners are liked. The closest you'll get is tolerance (and obsequiousness from service staff), which is most likely in the big tourist areas- central Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket. Bangkok is the best of those from a wages point of view.
If the beach is essential, I've heard some good things about Hua Hin- a Thai seaside resort which is being steadily taken over by falangs. Never been there myself, though. |

| Relationships between Thai staff and foreign staff have A LOT to do with the management of the school. I worked a S*r*s*s School under 2 different principals. Under the first, everyone got along great, had fun, nice place to work. Under the 2nd, everything changed and I don't know ANYONE (Thai or foreign) who enjoys working there now. One reason is the atmosphere of mistrust and 'us vs. them' which now prevails. This seems to be common at all branches of this school chain. Stay away! |
