Whats the best way of fixing up a job in Beruit? I'm having a hard time locating vacances on the net! Is it best to just turn up? Is there a demand etc for ESL teachers? |

If you have an MA and university experience, there are 2-3 good universities that hire from outside the counry. If you do not, you have to be there to find work. There are not lots of openings there because there are so many Lebanese who are fluent and educated to teach English. Expect only survival pay and you will likely have to hustle and work more than one place and do privates to make ends meet.

A job for a native speaker teaching EFL in Beirut ? That is a bit like getting a job on Tralfamador ! Maybe Tralfamador is easier.
One thing for sure - you have to go there. Forget any idea of doing it long-distance. Come to think of it that applies to the Planet Tralfamador too. If in doubt see the works of Kurt Vonnegut and Kilgore Trout. |

The problem in Beiruit is the competition from local EFL teachers, who have returned from abroad, are inbetween jobs in the Gulf, or are the products of the places you would be teaching at such as the American University of Beiruit.
There are places that hire for Lebanon, particularly for schools. |

Both International House and the British Council have jobs on their central vacancy lists at the moment for Beirut. The universities are probably hiring about now too for the autumn semester - check out their websites, particularly AUB, LAU, NDU, USJ, USEK, Balamand.
There is definitely work to be had for native speakers in Beirut. Image is important here and there's a certain cachet to having a 'real' native speaker as a teacher rather than an English-educated Lebanese one. |
