I am guessing that either a) there are about 10 liars who voted here (most expat teachers in China have only a BA if that, or b) only those with high degrees bothered to participate in the poll.

Being a little vain, I fall under the second category.

2-3 years of college is pretty much worthless as well...

I'd also have to say that something doesn't look right about those numbers. Confused

BA, and TESOL cert. Didn't vote earlier for reasons having nothing to do with the poll, but I have to share your scepticism rearding the numbers reporting. I regard myself as a prfoessional, but I can see how others might question my qualificatons. Then again, I've seen others far less qualified, and incidentally far less professional.
As an aside, I have to say that there are significant differences between different TEFL programs. Mine was a quick and dirty intro, not a lot of practical work. I basically learned on the job my first term here. (I was fortunate in that there were some very well qualified and experienced teachers, both Chinese and foreign, to learn from.) Other programs offer far more complete training. What I'd like to do (time, money and the other gods permitting) is return to Canada and get more complete training in either linguistics or education. I'd love to try teaching in my home province, just to see how it is different.

Well said.

Interestingly enough most of the alpha male types I know aren't particularly well educated, but they're successful and have less successful but educated people working for them.
I can just see them now, all the alpha males sitting around the staffroom in cardigans comparing qualifications.

I originally came here with the intent to spend a year studying Chinese while reapplying for PhD study (to hopefully get a grant or something the second time around). I ended up finding out that teaching in China was a lot more fun than being a graduate student in the US, so that explains my being out here with an MA.

As for the JD people, at my last school, I worked with a retired judge who came out to China to do something interesting with his retirement, and a younger lawyer who just got burnt out and decided to do something new for a while.
