I know most ESL teachers make only enough money to see them through to their next pay cheque, but has anyone here ever had the opportunity to transfer money back to an Australian bank account? If so, was it an easy process and did you lose out with fees etc? How did you go about it?
Cheers,

I know nothing about the Australian banking system but assume it's similar to the British one. My own choice is to change up Rupiah to sterling whenever the rate is reasonable and physically take it with me when I next visit. Transfers are possible but always seem to involve a bit of paperwork, while the likes of Western Union are punitively expensive. |

I use a smaller opertaion called Kangaroo Service. I've transferred dosh numerous times from Australia to Indonesia with no problems. They've always been very reliable. It costs $10 from here or Rp.20.000 (if I'm not wrong) from there. I'll look up the details if you're interested. |

Thanks for the replies. Western Union is out of the question - too expensive.
Winmar, does Kangaroo allow you to send money from Indo to Australia? Do they have an office in Jkt? Would be interested to know more.

Yeah you can transfer from there to here. I think their office is in Jkt, but you don't even need to go to it. You contact them, find out the rate if you want, put the money into their Indonesian account, then they'll put it into the Australian account later that day. I've only done it from Melbourne to Indo, but they've always been very reliable.
For some reason my wife gave the flier with all the information on it to her friend, so I don't have the details, but the Melbourne contact is Dewi, who you can reach at [email protected]. She could advise you of the relevant account number etc. Tell her that Rob from Melbourne referred you; she should know who you're talking about.
For their ABN details, go to this link and type in "Kangaroo Service Pty Ltd":

Thanks Winmar, looks interesting. There's another mob called Forex that do the same type of thing where you deposit your $ into their account but I've kind of been a bit wary about doing that sort of thing. I'll send Kangaroo and email and check it out.

Hi Winmar, I'm not sure. They were an American company anyway, but transferred to Australia. So it kind of defeated the purpose by having to transfer to their US account first. So I'll give Kangaroo a go.

I dunno about Australia, but I wired money back a couple of times and it was no big deal. I was able to do a wire transfer direct from my Indo bank account to my chequing account in Canada without much hassle. I think the fee charged was about 100,000 Rp per transfer. |

What about exchange rates? Di the bank give you the current rate or did they diddle you out of a bit? |
