Whats the system with mobile phones in BA? Do most of you teachers have one? Is it necessary and how much do they cost? Im coming from Europe - do you know if I can use the European mobiles over in BA (I mean, just the phone - not my plan). Thanks!

Yes.

Is it necessary?

Pretty much. Very useful for social life.

How much do they cost?

A no-frills cell phone is quite cheap if you've got Euros or pounds. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you need a DNI to get a monthly plan. Most of us buy the rechargeable cards with the scratch-off PINs. If you're thinking in Euros, it's not that expensive, but if you're trying to live off pesos, cell phone calls are really expensive IMHO. I send SMSs whenever I can avoid making a call.

You can use tri-band phones if I'm not mistaken. But you might have to get it unlocked ... at least that's what you have to do with American tri-band cell phones.

If you end up using your phone, all you have to do is buy a SIM card. It should only cost you about $10-15 pesos, so don't let them overcharge you! When I went, the guy at the store tried to charge me $40 pesos because he didn't think I knew any better. They'll charge you extra to unlock the phone, but I don't know how much that costs. Mine was already unlocked.

I think its a good idea to have a phone. The SIM CARD from Movistar will cost you ar$ 12.

If I was you, When I arrive to Argentine I would ask someone to lend me the SIM to try it in the equipment, if it works, then simply go and buy just only a SIM card.

If it doesnt work, go to COTO supermarket and buy a Movistar one for ar$109 , which includes ar$ 50 charge, so you end up paying ar$ 59.

Cheers.
