Yes, I know it is a little off-topic. (sorry in advance)
I'm currently teaching in the Middle East (UAE). I have 2 months off in the summer and have to return to Canada mid-june for a wedding. Then I want to get the heck out of frigid Canada for the month of July and do a little (or a lot) of scuba diving.
Any divers around that can give some feedback on extended stay places and good dive centers?
cheers. |

Cozumel and the surrounding areas are supposed to be the second best reefs around (second to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, that is), but keep an eye out on the NOAA website for any bleaching events that might be happening. The Great Barrier Reef is currently experiencing mass bleaching, which is frankly depressing to see. Cozumel is close to Playa del Carmen, which has some good hostels and dive centers, or you could stay at Puerto Morelos which is less touristy. |

Turtlepi1,
Cozumel is definitely a good dive spot. I've dove there several times and enjoyed it. In Cozumel you will drift dive. The boat will drop you off and you ride the current until you run out of air and the boat will pick you up. Depending on the current and how much air used you may drift a couple of miles. Pretty cool! Haven't been there since the Hurricane so I'm not sure about current conditions.
If you go I recommend Anita Divers. Rodolpho and his crew are great. They are a slow boat. Meaning you will do the deep dive in the morning, then anchor for lunch and a siesta, then shallow dive in the afternoon. You leave the dock about 9 AM and usually back by 2 or 3 PM. You can check them out at: www.cozumel-diving.net/anita-divers/
I've stayed at the Fiesta Americana. It's a good hotel but away from town. For hotel-air packages check out Funjet Vacations at: www.funjet.com
If you are not locked into Mexico other dive locations would be Roatan, Honduras; Belize and Cayman Islands. I have dove Cayman Island as well. Great diving but very pricey compared to Cozumel.
Enjoy!
