Hello - my fiance and I both have CELTAs and wish to teach in Japan.
We don't think working for one of the Nova-type companies is right for us, so our current strategy is to apply for advertised jobs on the net from individual schools and colleges.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend any specialist agencies that may be of use as well in terms of putting us in touch with these kind of employers.
Do such agencies exist? Anyone had experience of agencies? |

Before we talk about agencies, would you mind answering a couple of short but necessary questions first?
What are your nationalities?
Do you have bachelor degrees?
These are necessary questions for visa purposes. |

With a CELTA you have a fair shot of applying for a job at a high school but they will likely want an interview first and a definite date that you can arrive in Japan and start work.
Universities and junior colleges require a Masters degree for most part time jobs as well as publications for full-time positions. Becuase of a drop in student numbers 2-year colleges are going the way of the dinosaur as more schools close every year.
Are you talking about high schools, conversation schools or tertiary institutions? in high school classes are bigger, students may not be there voluntarily and the teaching in general is different than at a private conversation school.
The best time for applying for high school jobs is around November or December,as the school year in Japan begins in April and that is when most schools advertise for new teachers.

Im not sure which agencies you refer to, but the big schools like NOVA are private language companies, who hire their own teachers abroad train them once they arrive in the country and get them working teaching NOVA's students.
There are 'agencies' which hire teachers and send them to work at the company's clients, e.g. e.g. junior and senior high schools, as ALTs.
Many of these 'agencies' in Japan take a percentage of the teachers salaries as a 'middleman' between the teacher and high school.
I know in Canada and Australia NOVA has outside 'agencies' who interview and introduce teachers to NOVA for an administration fee.
The only other conversation school company in Japan that I know of is Westgate corp which hires teachers to work as teachers at conversation lounges in Japanese universities.

I can second Altia.
They are a good outfit and will not give you any stress. In fact, they can probably find a place for both of you to work or stay together. THey get contracts from cities and then place teachers. Most cities have at least 4 or 5 teachers, so staying together should be fine.
Holidays are good - 6 weeks summer, 2 or 3 in winter and spring.
No trouble with pay or benefits.
Basically, you get left alone to do your thing.
Apartment key money is paid for you. Paid, NOT lent to you. |
