I am interested in knowing the following. Are contracts the norm or the exception? How many sick days are you allowed? Do you get personal days? Are there substitutes where you work?
I will start. We have contracts. We are allowed the sick days necessary if we have a doctors note. Personal days are unheard of. We are free to handle personal business between classes. There are no substitutes. |

We have contracts, although we receive them near the end of the term to which they apply, or sometimes even after the term has finished.
There's no set number sick days. As long as we have a written excuse from a doctor associated with our private medical insurance, we aren't docked pay for missing work due to medical reasons.
There are no substitutes for short-term absences. We call in and have our classes canceled. For longer absences (between 2 and 3 weeks,) we can ask other teachers to cover for us. I've subbed for other teachers, and either the university paid me or the teacher whose classes I covered paid me. Longer than 2 to 3 weeks, and the university contracts a substitute to cover.
On my type of contract, I have no official personal days, because mine is not considered a continuing contract. Employees with continuing contracts, including secretaries and custodians, have 5 personal days (das econmicos) per year that they can take off with pay. However, that policy as applied to non-continuing contracts is flexible. A couple of years ago, I had to make an emergency trip back to the States -- my mom had a stroke -- and I missed 7 days of classes. My classes were canceled, and I wasn't docked any pay for my absence. |

That was certainly a rude response from someone who's supposed to be a professional administrator of a well known chain school in this country. For many of us who are teaching in academic institutions, the topics in this thread are important issues. If you found this thread so boring, why didn't you simply move on to a different thread instead of adding your rude response? |

My "yawn" was not aimed at you, Ben. This is about the 5th time that cwc has started a thread, in order to make a point about someone taking a day off, to attend a wedding. The others were deleted. We get it already.
Again, no offense meant. |

I certainly hope they gave him the day off! If not, I suppose teaching a class in a tux would make for some interesting material. |
