Okay, this is really embarrassing to ask, but I have to know, so here goes: I have genital herpes. Don't worry, I always tell um first. Here's the thing, though. I'm getting worried that this is gonna shoot down my whole TEFL teaching plan. First of all, are Turkish schools gonna wanna know about that before you come teach for them or will they not even ask? Second, if they don't ask before I come over, how will they react if they find out when I get there? If I go to a clinic, do they have to report me as a public health risk? What if things go bad between me and some woman I decided to date and she rats me out? Can I get the daily treatment I take now there? Sorry to ask so many questions at once, but like I said, I'm worried now that this is gonna shoot down my whole plan. If anyone out there has this, too, please IM me and tell me how you're handling it. Thanx for all the help, guys. |

Don't worry Omeo. You won't be asked and you won't be tested by your employer. Although your health insurer might ask |

Come on - do you imagine that there will be a 'short-arm inspection' at morning roll call ? |

I think herpes is a non-issue here, like AIDS-- not that I am comparing them. No one asks and for godsake don't tell. |

Well, if employers and immigration authorities are testing for herpes now, they'll be testing for halitosis next. Can you pass? Some places do require and HIV test for immigrant visas don't they? Like Australia? Japan? |

Omeo, you should now do a crosscultural comparison of the responses you've received from teachers in Japan and teachers in Turkey (and teachers from any other forum where you posted the same question).
Results might be interesting! |

I don't know of any teacher in this country who's been required to take a medical. |
I remember years ago going for a chest X-ray. |

All state or privet employees in Turkey must go for a Medical check up. You have to provide clean medical record for full legal cover.
As is often the case in turkey few know of the the rules and regulations and even less enforce them.
You should have no problem what so ever. Also if you got to the good privet medical centers around town they can help you in English and in privet manner.
Good luck, It might be a laugh for some , but I'm sure your not laughing |

Don't I have to take a physical before I go anywhere? Of course I'm smart enough not to mention it during an interview or an application, but don't I have to be cleared by my doctor before I go? I'm more worried about THEM telling on me. |
