Posted: Tue Feb 07, 2006 9:15 pm Post subject: I want to start teaching ESL on-line from my home! Advice?? |
|
|
Hello fellow ESL teachers,
I taught ESL in South Korea and now I am back in Canada where I have taught FSL for ten years. I really miss teaching ESL, but I'm not in a position to travel anymore (I have a dog and I'm hoping to have a baby soon). I have read articles written by ESL teachers who work on-line, using a microphone and webcam, and I really want to get into that.
Any advice? Do you know of people who do this?
If I could make $15 CDN dollars per hour doing this, I would be pretty happy.

Does anyone have any idea in regards to work online? What if you are doing online work for a company in another country? Do you need a work permit to do this work? Anyone have any idea? |

In the International jobs section there have two or three ads this week for exactly that; both offering a bit more than $15 an hour |

Judging from the number of replies, I'm guessing that there is either not much demand for this service, OR the people who offer this service are keeping their secrets secret!
But there must be someone who can give me some tips!

A friend of mine used to teach in Japan, then returned to the USA, where he also wanted to take up such online teaching with his former Japanese students.
Problems he faced:
1. He prefers a Mac, while most people own PC's. This poses some communication problem with various software, and notably a problem in some videoconferencing software. For example, Skype.
2. He couldn't figure out a way to guarantee payment across the ocean.
3. His hours would have been terribly off from a normal lifestyle, considering the 14-17 hour time difference.
4. Advertising posed problems.
He gave this up. |

I was interviewed by one company to teach online. I am thinking about doing it but am worried that I might get in trouble with Korean immigration since I would be working for a Korean company. I am not sure what the rules on this would be. The company hires people that are living in American as well. |

The name of the company is Visualedu Corp. Just read the ads on Dave's. There have been three advertisements for online jobs over the last month. |
