I've seen that the government's P-NET program offers an accomodation allowance of around HK$12k for teachers living outside a certain area of Hong Kong.

Can anyone provide specific details on this area, and where you would have to live in order to be considered eligible for this allowance? Thanks.

This was all I could find on the EMB site regarding accomodation allowance for teachers in the NET program:

Quote:
Passage, baggage and medical allowances and a special allowance of HK$12,950***(*approx. US$1,664) per month are provided for appointees whose normal place of residence is outside Hong Kong. (A NET will not be eligible for the special allowance if his/her spouse is currently receiving the same allowance or any housing benefit from his/her own employer.)

Does that mean you have to be living somewhere other than Hong Kong Island, like in Kowloon?

Wow! "normal place of residence is outside Hong Kong" means places other than Hong Kong - like USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada.

You've applied for a job to children to read - frightening!

Are you telling me that they will pay people HK$12k a month just because I'm a non-native, no matter where I live on the island? If so, that is utterly incredible (and extraordinarily generous).

It read naturally to me as simply a reference to an accomodation allowance for teachers living outside Hong Kong island. Here in Taiwan schools sometimes offer an accomodation allowance for teachers living at a significant distance from the school.

I haven't actually applied, and I don't know what 'a job to children to read' means (where I come from that's inaccurate grammar).

Provided that you are eligible for the housing allowance it is paid wherever you choose to live in Hong Kong.
Those people who have schools in the New Territories or on the Islands still get the $12950 even though housing for them will be a lot less than for those people living on Hong Kong Island.
If you get accommodation for less than the $12950 you do not have to pay the extra money back to the government - it is yours and some people are almost able to live on it and save their salary.

Thank you, that is most useful.
