There are cheap package offers for Istanbul at the moment, but have heard that it's cold in December. Just want to explore the city. Is it worth it, this time of year?? Your honest opinions please.........
Thanks |

It can be colder than Qatar! (Assuming u r there) But it isn't so bad if u r prepared. Bring warm coat, hat, umbrella (can rain, of course) and such things. Be relaxed and go with what comes. I think you can have a good time and I would take advantage of a good travel deal if I were you. |

Bring winter boots without heels, pavements can be tricky if covered in ice/slush. |

Bring your wellies. Taksim is like a mud bath at the moment. All the side streets have been dug up and not replaced. I was told this was deliberate by the local Government. They want a load of bars to close and move away from the central area, so they are making life akward for bar managers |

I tink istanbul is great in any weather, though pay attention to the advice above.
dmb, I hadn't heard that about the bars. Istiklal Caddesi is a real mess, though. I think the side streets will be ok by the summer, inshallah. The new tiles will be nice, one of these months... |

This year more then most. Istanbul is in for a very cold winter, so watch out. The snow shows up late Dec and mid Jan (or Feb for last 3 years) yet this year I think its going to start early.

Your right in one way, but it won't work, infact the local press are having a go at the local gov't for all the work projects they can't seem to finnish.
Anyway most of us here are used to some mud in Winter. If you want to see a clean city go to Ankara. |

I think it is worth it, but it can be chilly. However, I live in Wisconsin so it's all relative. If you are staying in hostels, make sure you ask about their heating system. I stayed in a hostel in December and all that was there to heat the room was a large space heater. This was only operational between 8:00 pm and 7:00 am or so because they shut the electricity off at these times. The upside to this was I didn't stay in the hostel at all.
Anyway, the hostel was cheap and I had a great time besides. |

Well, I ended up going this weekend just gone and had a great time; fab food, great people....a bit chilly though but that didn't ruin the break- But wow -what a city! I can understand why you all live there now. Definitely going back there again. |
