Hola!

There is a website that I enjoy visiting called www.straightdope.com. It is set up like this message board, and it is a place where people can ask questions and/or submit opinions on anything. I like this board except for the anagrams and "computer speak". For example:

WTF-What the f**k!
SIL-Son in law
DIL-Daughter in law
LOL-Laugh out loud
AFIAK-As if I actually cared.
IMHO-In my humble opinion

There are others, I have no clue about....
BTW, TMI, ROFL, IRL, AAMOF.

Another thing that is annoying as h e l l is the use of well in this context, The boy was, well....very fat, or Shanghai is, well.....a very polluted city. is the "well" supposed to be an apology or something?

Also, I hate when people use a good word and abbreviate it in oral and/or written form. VEGGIES drives me nuts when I see it for example.

LASTLY, IT IS OK TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. THE SUPPOSED YELLING IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD.

Senor

Hola! Que pasa? (A pity they do not have tildes, accent marks and upside down exclamation marks on my keyboard)

Your post...was....un poco interesante...pero un poco extrano tambien.
And since there is no tilde for the "n" in "senor", I keep thinking that you are "Senior boogie woogie"....and wondering where "Junior boogie woogie" is....
Hasta la vista,Senor Smile

Dear senor boogie woogie,
Well, ( all's well that begins well ), we all have our PPs ( Pet Peeves ), but I think you'd better GUTI ( get used to it ), as regards e-mail/Net abbreviations; I'd say they're, well, HTS ( here to stay ). You can, BTW ( by the way ) find lists of these on the Net; just type " e-mail abbreviations " into a search box. As for the " well ", well, I think it's useful in that it indicates a " hesitancy " on the part of the writer to, well, come right out and say something, well, critical. BUT REGARDING THE USE OF ALL CAPS, WELL, THE SHOUTING MAY BE " ALL IN MY HEAD ", BUT I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT, WELL, IT is MY HEAD. HTH ( hope this helps ).
TTFN ( Ta Ta for now )

Dear Irish,
There's a simple solution, really. Just keep your eyes tightly shut while reading the posts.

John

BTW = By The Way
TMI = Too Much Information
ROFL = Rolling On the Floor Laughing (also ROTFL)
IRL = In Real Life (as in when you shut the computer off...can ppl actually do that? Laughing )
AAMOF = As A Matter Of Fact

I think the anagrams are kind of fun to figure out...an English lesson of sorts. Wink

I'm surprised nobody has pointed this out yet. LMAO, IMHO, ROTFL and others are not Anagrams, anagrams are words or phrases formed by re-arranging all the letters in another word. Some examples of anagrams are:
A Decimal Point- I'm a Dot in Place
Animosity - Is No Amity
Contradiction - Accord not in it
Desperation - A Rope Ends It
Dormitory - Dirty Room
Eleven plus two - Twelve plus one
Schoolmaster - The Classroom
The nudist colony - No untidy clothes
Actors - Co-star
Arabian Desert - It's a heated barren
The Arctic Circle - Chart ice circlet
As the twig is bent, the tree is inclined - See treatise's intent: "Begin with child."

LMAO, IMHO, ROTFL and others are abbreviations (I hope nobody tries to call them acronyms).

Actually, I did mean acronyms, not anagrams. Pardon me, I realize that errors are unacceptable in the ESL/EFL industry. Are those abbreviations? Well, then I guess you and I have different ideas of what the term abbreviation means. To me, abbreviations are the short forms of words (i.e. Mon. for Monday). An acronym (as I understand it) is a group of letters which stand for words (i.e. AIDS for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).

I'm thinking of an anagram right now with the following letters: pompousass ...Can anyone help? Wink
