Hello,
I am a Canadian female and I am graduating with my BA in the spring. I am interested in teaching English in Japan. The ideal situation is that I get offered a job with a company while I am living in Toronto, Canada. I am hoping to leave for Japan in July, August or September. What are the chances that I get a job that starts during these months? I have heard that most jobs start in April, but I am not done university until May and I want to stick around for convocation. Should I go for it and start trying to find a job for the summer months now or wait? Is there a good hiring period in the fall?
Thanks.

July and August will be dead times. September is slightly better for the minor surge in hiring that occurs for October openings.

Hello. Summer is slow, but you should be able to set something up for September. I was a September hire. Some conversation schools hire year round, so it's best to check with a number of companies to see what's happening.

Nova, GEOS, ECC and I believe JET all have offices in Toronto. Give them a call, or check their websites. They usually post a message regarding upcoming recruiting.

Give yourself plenty of time. It can take a couple of months to get a position, then another couple of months to get your visa.

Good luck.

JET applications go out in November, interviews in February and the next batch of JETs fly out in August of 2007.

For NOVA go to their site at http://www.teachinjapan.com and for AEON http://www.aeonet.com

It takes about 8-12 weeks to process a work visa from overseas so May-June is a good time to start applying for jobs.

Just to add to the previous posts - if you are looking for an ALT position other than JET, Interac will be interviewing in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto in May or early June (check http://www.interac.co.jp/recruit/cgi-bin/index.cgi/welcome/home.html) for an August start.

Best of luck! Wink
