I'm leaving Japan soon. For the last year my employer has been requiring fairly hefty payments into the Japanese pension plan. I've heard that it's possible to get this money back (to a point). Does anyone know of any good web sites to find information on this? Any first hand experiences of getting pension money back?
Thanks |

Depending on how many months you have been in japan refund of of pension payments are paid on a pro-rate basis. If you have lived here 36 months (3 years) you get back the equivalent of 2.4 months average salary. The government will take out 20% in tax as its no longer pension but earned income. You can claim this 20% tax back from the government.

You can only make an application for a refund after you leave the country and have severed all ties with japan. |

Canadians cannot claim this 20% back from the pension, that is what I have been told by my university. |
