Hey. I�m new to the forum and although I have done some searching, I have a few questions that are specific to my situation.
My girlfriend and I are planning to go to Japan to teach English. I have 10 years experience teaching ESL. My girlfriend does not have any experience but she does have a TESL certificate. Naturally, we would like to live together but we�re not sure how to go about finding jobs that suit our different levels of experience. We have done some research into the big companies such as Nova, etc, but I think I could probably do better in terms of pay and quality of work. Would it be better for one of us to get work from home (Vancouver) and then the other to find a job after arriving in Japan? Or would it be better to play it safe and both just try to get jobs with a big chain?
Any advice you can give us will be greatly appreciated. |

With no experience in Japan, you are both probably going to have to start at the bottom. I assume you both have bachelor's degrees, of course, to make you eligible for work visas.
Don't think that just because you two might get hired by a big chain that you would be placed together, either. |

Better paying jobs are usually found in universities, technical colleges and high schools and most of those do not recruit for teachers overseas. You need to be in japan, have japan-related teaching experience, preferably with Asian students and a higher degree is highly recommended. there are thousands of people roaming around japan with a BA and years of experience but cant seem to get out of the language school rut without connections and proper qualifications.
Come to Japan, pay your dues, make connections and work your way into better jobs, no one will offer them to you straight off the plane.
PS Good luck finding something with better pay than whats on offer at the moment. |
