Hello all,

I haven't posted in awhile, but this will be the first of many. I will be leaving in about 2-1/2 weeks to Ibaraki-ken to teach English as an ALT. I am very excited and am making several preparations for my long awaited journey.

My first question is if you know of any links I could look up housing in and around that prefecture, specifically to the town I will be staying at (Hasaki). I want to keep my options open and look for both private apartments and guest housing (homestay).

I also heard there was an apartment company that doesn't charge you key money/deposit etc etc and is catered towards foreigners. If you posted the name that would greatly help as well.

Thank you to all who help!

Beware of companies who don't charge key money. You'll likely be paying at least 20% per month more than the apartment is worth. Paying the key money up front is more economical. It sucks, but it's cheaper. Found a place in my area offered by one such company at 110,000. Found the same apartment at a local agent for 83,000. 2 year contract, 27,000 extra a month = 648,000. Key money would be 166,000 maximum. These companies are taking advantage of your ignorance of the local market and your inability to communicate.

I moved this month. 2 months deposit, 1 month key money, 1 month agent fee and first month's rent. Often key money is two months. My rent is 98,000. Total was about $4,500. I've bought cars for less! This rent price is way more than you'll be paying in your area, but the system will likely be about the same.

Good luck!

I highly doubt that any rental companies for foreigners operate in Hasaki. I've been up to Mito in Ibaraki a couple of times as I have friends there, but I've never heard of Hasaki. Basically, I don't think these rental companies operate outside of the major cities.

I wouldn't worry about it too much though. Your rent is going to be dirt cheap and whoever is bringing you over as an ALT will presumably act as your guarantor and help you a bit in getting set up.

Assuming that Hasaki is even cheaper than Mito, you should be able to get a nice apartment for 30,000 or 40,000 yen.
