Didn't know there were any in Japan. How much do you want to spend, when, where?

i'd be pleased with a clean room for $50, but that might be asking too much. clean and safe.

There are lots around, in the 2500 - 4000 yen range. I think most are listed in the Lonely Planet.

I stayed in one on Xmas Eve (my first time in a YH) in Tokushima, Shikoku. Besides myself there were only two other guests, both of them pilgrims doing the 88 temples walk, and both must have been pushing 80.

It seems they are sticklers for curfews though. The one I stayed in was 11pm, while I actually live on the same street as the one in Nagano City, and the curfew there is 9.30, I heard last week from a couple of people I met who were staying there. That sucks.

I think what you're looking for is a "gaijin house". Many are in Tokyo, and I'm sure you'll find them is just about every other city as well.

Seek and ye shall find.

Gaijin houses are like boarding houses and can be arranged for a week at a time if necessary.

For info on youth hostels in Japan, look here.

that was good to hear. and the early curfews are fine with me. i'm not making this trip for nightlife and i'm not a real big nightlife person anyway.
