Hi,
A friend and I are currently looking for a short-term homestay (around 5 months) in CR. We don't have jobs lined up, but we'll likely end up in Heredia or San Jose. What's the best way of finding a homestay?
Also, are there any lists of english schools in San Jose/Heredia/etc floating around?

Check out the post titled need a Homestay?, i can also give you emails of other people who have stayed with Zeneida, if you want to chat with them. I stayed with her for almost a year and was 100% happy with her and her family.
as far as lists of schools, i dont know if he still has the list, but if you check out postings by John Hall, you can pm him and maybe he still has the lists and can email them to you.
good luck

I'm currently living in the place Doreen has mentioned and agree with her completely. Zeneida and her family have been nothing but kind and accommodating to me.
Her home is located in central Heredia and within walking distance of pretty much anything you'd need (for instance, the net cafe I'm setting in as I type this is pretty much right out my door). If it can't be found in Heredia, there are dozens of buses leaving all the time to San Jos and it's only a ten minute walk from her home to their stops.
As of this moment there is one room in the home that is unoccupied. Soon there will be two (in about two weeks...).

As for a list of schools, I have a hard copy that I could type out and post on here later.
I've only been in CR for three weeks and was able find work on my third day; however, I was unhappy with the pay ($2 an hour) and after some searching around encountered plenty of other schools willing to pay (substantially) more. One thing to remember is that people do negociate here, at least in these small private institutions I've hit up so far. Go in asking for - demanding, even! - more than you think is possible and then barter down to something reasonable.
I've talked with several other schools and am working out a schedule / figuring out what's what and where I want to work. The point is it's NOT hard to find jobs here - just don't come down expecting to find $8. Seems like $6 is considered very good pay...
Today was my last day with the $2 an hour school (OBM) in Heredia. I plan to spend the next couple of weeks travelling around the country and having some fun. However, I'll also be calling up other institutions and getting some ideas about what's out there.
Since I've only been here three weeks, I won't pretend to know it all and I'll end this post here.
I'll try to type out that list in my free time, and also post again with up-to-date info after I've contacted and investigated more schools here in the Central Valley.
Cheers!
