Is this a pretty big deal in Japan. I've seen some people mention it on other threads. I was just wondering, because I could then get my parents to download it when I go over there and I can talk to them for free from an internet cafe.

The last thing people want at the internet cafe is other people yapping the whole time. No, internet cafe's don't use skype generally. Many have yahoo or MSN messenger to chat. With the general skype setup, you need either a headset with a microphone or just a microphone. Skype is a pretty big thing around the world now, not just in Japan.
