Hi , I live in Indonesia and am thinking of getting certified, the course here is about $1400. I guess there are cheaper ways on line but I think I want the classroom experience. From browsing the web it looks like the salery there is only about $700./month. Maybe thats old information, but that's not enough to live on anymore, things have gotten alot more expensive lately. Maybe it's enough for someone just wanting to travel and see new places for the first time. Can you make a good living teaching english in Jakarta? Thanks for the newbie forum !!! Bangskat.

Well, I taught for an EF in Jakarta a couple of years back. I earned $725 US per month. I found that my rent, utilities, food and basic living expenses came to about $150 per month. I travelled quite a bit (every long week I'd go out of town, and I flew to a couple of different places during longer holidays). I still managed to bank about $5000 US over a year.

I met quite a few TEFL instructors who saved almost nothing - but they also usually went out clubbing in the ex-pat nightclubs two or three nights a week, and ended up spending a lot of money on drinking and hookers.
