Hey everyone,

From what I have read there seems to be a good mix of people on this forum. Some that have been teaching for years, some learning from the mistakes of signing their first contract to quickly.

The last point is exactly why ive signed up. My partner and me are flying to Shanghai in August to take up a position in September. We have emailed around to lots of websites/schools and everyone seems interested.

We have receivd an offer and my partner just wants to accept it and know that its all sorted. I however, after much reading am more concerned about the in's and out's of the contract.

We are not here to make money but purely take in the culture, and live a little. The basis of the contract offers us an apartment (with all utensils???) a salary of 5000rhb?? per month, teaching 18 Hours a week.

The job offer is just outside Shanghai. Can anyone give advice or what we need to ask or look out for to help us out. I have replied to the employer asking the obvious questions but im sure I have missed less obvious points that could have an affect. Are we right to not sign straight away and keep searching for the best offer or should we accept as the position might not be there when we finally do decide!!!

Your views and advice wil be much appreciated

all the best

Research your school and then research it again.

(How long have they been established, what type of school are they, have they employed foreign teachers before?)

Importantly, ask the school if they can provide you with the e-mail address/es of their previous / current foreign teacher/s. This is the first thing I would do...

If you knew the size of Shanghai, then "just outside" could well mean a four hour round trip.
5000 with housing for a beginner isn;t too bad. That's 5000x2 I assume!
