Hi,
I'm tossing up whether to take a job in Korea or Taiwan for a mid-2006 start. I've been in Mainland China for a while now and am keep to actually start earning meaningful money and just wondering what the costs for living in Taiwan (pref. Taipei) are at the moment? How much do you guys pay for your apartments (if you do?) How much is a meal, a coke, beer, going out etc. How much do you spend a month?
I know I can probably earn more in Korea but I'm not a big fan (taught there for 6 months) and I haven't been to Taiwan yet so I'm swinging that way - just dont know how much I can save...
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Anthony |

I have been living in Taiwan for almost 6 years now and have some friends who have been teaching in Korea for years, too. My impression is that Korea may be a bit better for savings, especially compared to Taipei. Rent in Taipei is ridiculous. And, many schools in Korea provide flights and housing, which is a rarity here.
I would suggest a smaller city like Taichung or Kaohsiung if you decide on Taiwan...you will get paid the same and save far more. Salaries are really no different no matter where you go here, unless you have special skills that can be used in a place like Taipei where there is more opportunity for something other than teaching (i.e. editing, exam prep, acting/modelling, etc.).
Good luck! |
