I have seen a job by this school in Taichung that sounds like a really good offer. So what's the catch? Any information would be helpful.

In Chinese the name is pronounced Wega, it is the Taichung branch of Wego school in Yang Ming Shan.
If you have no problem working for a school named after a former director of the secret police who was personally responsible for the disappearance and murder of hundreds and possibly thousands of political prisoners there is another factor to take into consideration.
Here is a discussion on the school in question.
http://www.tealit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9113&highlight=wego#9113
There have been more than twenty verified complaints filed on the school over the last ten years. Some of them are downright terrifying.
Extreme caution is recommended.

For all you KMT stalwarts out there.

The White terror
The tension burst into the open in the February 28 massacre of 1947, when a small incident in Taipei led to island-wide demonstrations. The Kuomintang was initially taken aback, but secretly sent troops from China, which started to round up and execute a whole generation of leading figures, students, lawyers and doctors. In all, between 18,000 and 28,000 people were killed. During the "white terror" of the following years, thousands of people were arrested, imprisoned, tortured and murdered by the KMT's highly repressive KGB-style security apparatus, the Taiwan Garrison Command.

How many people this school has harmed is debatable as is the murderous history of the man the school is named after.

You're a nut buddy. Looney tunes

You have to be looney tunes to work for that school. After two months of teaching there I found out that my ARC was not from the school I nwas working at. When I complained I lost my job and still have not received my tax with holdings statement.
I filed a complaint with the Council of Labor affairs and they are "looking into it".
The horror stories coming from this place are ridiculous.

This will tell you all you need to know. If not, please feel free to zap me a line. The bottom line: good school until the Hess Rejects came along and screwed everything up.

But that was back in 2000. Who knows? They may have gotten their act back together by now.

I have never worked there, but one of my colleagues taught there for several years before he came to Ming Chuan. Like others here, his main concern was that the amount of work was getting too heavy for him. Otherwise, when I asked him about working there, he said it was fine.

I suggest caution with some of the complaints voiced on links to this posting. The link to tealit
http://www.tealit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9413&sid=3ad8ba842877ba826b840702392a578f
had one writer stating that some bad things happened to 2 other people. On a different website, someone posting under the same name claimed that a similar event happen to him.

It's also noteworthy that the long, detailed, and well informed answer to the often repeated alllegation about a health insurance scam at Wego
http://www.tealit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9568&sid=3ad8ba842877ba826b840702392a578f
went unanswered.

Hi, Scott!

Your colleague at Ming Chuan wouldn't happen to be a CBC, would he? Kinda handsome, married to a French girl, soft-spoken? If so, he is the only reason I was able to restrain myself from strangling a couple o' those HESS REJECTS. IMHO, that colleague of yours is a good guy and one of the best English teachers in Taiwan.

It is a small world, isn't it. I agree that he's a great guy. When I see him on the bus, I'll pass on your comments.

The health insurance regulations are quite specific. At the time of this complaint the NHIC program was in it's early stages and many well connected KMT owned institutions were certain they were exempt from the law.
Wego /Wegor school realized that they were not immune and would be held accountable. All those who had voiced dissent were immediately deported and barred from re-entry. Those who were found to be able to avoid deportation were harassed and threatened.
The reports concerning the burgalaries at two such teachers apartments were confirmed as were the deportations, threatening phone calls and legal complaints.

As for the health insurance and KMT/Mob connections and deportations, I can neither confirm nor deny your reports, Aristotle.

However, I CAN substantiate your claim about the apartment burglaries. Back around the Turn of the Millennium when I worked there, Wego used to own an old Japanese hot spring / brothel in Xin Beitou, which they converted into dorms for the teachers. Of course, most of the tennants were us foreign types and we were ALWAYS having problems with stuff missing.

Especially around Chinese New Year when we'd all run off on vacation. The problem was mostly with the "Zhong Wu Chu" or Office of General Affairs. These guys were the biggest pains in the butts! It seemed their only reason for existence was to make teachers' lives, especially the lives of us foreign teachers, miserable. Lots of stories here (come to think of it, they were ALWAYS skimming money off our salaries and probably were responsible for the "Health Insurance Scam" you're mentioning) and there simply ain't enough time or room, so let's get back to my testimony.

At the end of Chinese New Year vacation, we'd always come home and the entire dorm building would shake with the sounds of our swearing. Cell phones, pagers, CDs, my piggy bank full of NT$50 coins, NOTHING was sacred. It was precisely then that I learned to stop accumulating stuff that has any monetary value. It was also then that I began to pay close attention to our Cleptomaniac Cleaning Lady, who worked for the Department of General Affairs.

I noticed that every once in a while, the CCL would forget to lock various storage room doors. To make a long story short, I happened to have a friend who was a locksmith and we eventually made a MASTER KEY for the entire dorm building. Armed with this new master key, all us foreign teachers let ourselves into the CCL's main hideout and...

MY PAGER!
MY BOOKS!
MY CD COLLECTION!
MY CELL PHONE!
MY STEREO!

It was just like Christmas again. Very Happy

Of course, a semester later they kicked everybody out and closed the dorm building. But we also succeeded in taking the CCL and the Dean of General Affairs down with us. I didn't stick around to see the dust settle, though. I went back to the States for my PhD.

Hope this helps. And keep up the good work, Ari...
