My apologies if this question has been covered many times but I couldn't find any answers in the sticky's.
Does a British citizen require a visa of any kind to enter Japan ?
Can that person enter Japan on a single flight ticket ? (they have accepted an offer of a position and will do a Korean visa run the following week) |

Every foreign national requires a visa but you may be granted a 90-day tourist waiver at the airport (otherwise known as a tourist visa). You can NOT work on this visa.
You need either a return ticket or a ticket to an onward destination with enough funds to be able to leave the country. To my knowledge you can not enter Japan on a one-way ticket with Japan as the destination.
Do NOT under any circumstances tell immigration you have come here to work on a tourist visa or you will be refused entry. Tell them you are sightseeing and then change your status to a work visa once you enter the country. |

You don't have to go to Korea to get a visa anymore. You can do it at the Immigration office here in Japan. Will your certificate of eligibility be ready for you when you arrive? If so, just take it to the immigration office.
Good Luck! |

I didn't realise they had changed the visa rules. Being able to do it in Japan is a major plus.
The certificate will be ready just in time for when they arrive in Japan.
My best option is to ask them to obtain a tourist visa. This way, they can enter Japan on a single ticket....unless anyone can correct me otherwise. |

I agree with Paul that I don't think you will be allowed to even board the plane in England with a one-way ticket to Japan. You will have to buy a return ticket. |

Can anyone confirm this....Can you really process your visa in Japan ?
I thought you had to go to Seoul for the visa run.
I will have a certificate of eligibility. |

When exactly will you have the certificate of eligibility? If you get it before leaving England you're all set as you will be able to go to the Japan Embassy in Britian and get your work visa to show immigration when you arrive and airlines will let you fly on the one way ticket. If it's waiting for you in Japan you must buy a return ticket as airlines don't let you on a plane going one way if you are not allowed to live in the country you are going to. I know this from my own experience of flying to the U.S. (I'm Canadian) from London on a one way ticket and they wouldn't let me board the plane. I had to buy a return ticket on the spot (a later got a full refund). |

I know a few people in the last couple of years that didn't have to leave the country. I can confirm that it is the case, sometimes. Sometimes you do have to leave. There seems to be no rhyme or reason, other than good and bad luck. |

I cannot believe that immigration could be this blaise over an immigration/visa matter..... |
