Obviously this is an odd group of destinations, but which would be your pick if you were just starting out? I will have a four-year degree and a CELTA by August and I am very interested in these three cities. Any advice or suggestions? |

Hi there. I can only provide insight about Prague since it's my current home and site of my first TEFL job post-CELTA. I've been here long enough to have learned the following: Prague is a beautiful city--perhaps one of the most beautiful in the world--and a Westerner can pretty easily acclimate to its pub culture. You will undoubtedly have a good time here. On the other hand, you simply won't make any money (similar I think to most parts of Europe West of here). Don't come thinking you'll save anything--the Czech crown does not translate to much across the borders. Travelling is a little harder to do if you want to see other EU countries as they're pretty expensive compared to the CR, which still operates on its own currency during its EU probationary period. The winters are long and dark and cold--much like Boston (if you're American)only a little worse. The people can seem fairly reserved and grumpy. If you're not white, you'll likely face the infamous Czech passive racism. The city is flooded with tourists many months--save January and February--but as I say, in the battle between communists and tourists, I'd hope the Czechs would favor the latter--even as they can be an inconvenience at times (downtown is practically an International city from March to October. Hey, it's super cheap to visit here from the real EU.) Life here on the whole, however, is relaxed and enertaining. You can travel cheaply inside the country and to points East. The nightlife is good. The girls are pretty until they hit their 30s. It's probably a good first job here in Prague since the culture is European and laid-back. Prague is very "liveable," as in it's a small "big" city and very easy to get around on the Metro. The city will impress, but, again, you will have to surrender the thought of making money. If school loans are motivating you, go to Asia. If having a couple of beers in an enchanting 1000 year old city sounds appealing, Prague is your place.
Good luck. |

I thnk you can probably save a little bit more in Saigon - but frankly I am a BIG fan of Thailand. The people and food are super - the lifestyle relaxed and gentle.
The students are great fun here - and this is a very good place to get your feet wet - and get a feel for the profession. |

I agree with the comments made about both Bangkok and Prague. I haven't spent any time in Saigon. The Thai people are wonderful and it is a joy to teach there. Praha is a wonderful city for culture, but the people can seem a bit cool (rude?) occasionally.
One thing that needs to be said about Prague is "watch out for pickpockets on public transportation".
