I am planning to re-locate to Thailand soon. I have already spent 3 months there on holiday. The problem is my sons...Mookie and Junior, a pair of 55 kg Rhodesian Ridgebacks...9 years old. I know how to get them into Thailand, and that's about it. I am planning on being someplace other than BKK, Maybe CM, or a beach town. Does anyone know anything about the availability of BIG BAGS O' dog food?
And Do the dreaded hilltribe dognappers steal non feral pooches for din-din?
Maybe I should go to Poland instead and feed me an' the boys golumpkies!

Thanks for ANY and ALL comments

good luck.

when are you arriving? i'm in bangkok with my golden retriever and i've always wanted to meet a rhodesian ridgeback!

most good quality dog foods are available here in thailand (pedigree chum, eukanuba, royal canin, etc.). big bags are available, especially if you have a big supermarket in the area (tesco, big c or carrefour). pet dogs are quite popular so there are usually loads of pet shops, vets and grooming places in big towns (less so out in the countryside, but anywhere you'll be going will be big enough.) however, most pet dogs in thailand tend to be of the toy size (cheaper, easier to manage etc). you may, for example, have difficulty finding a groomer who will do big dogs.

thai attitudes to dogs are quite mind-boggling. it goes from the over pampering of little rat dogs (sorry, i mean min pins and shihtzus) to willful neglect of siberian huskies (YES, they do have them here, cruel as it sounds given the heat!), and then everything in between.

certainly your neighbours will probably think you're weird taking the guys for a walk - the locals tend to just let theirs out. they will think you a weird if you pick up after them, but woe betide if you forget one day or run out of baggies, then it's let's gang up on the foreigner! and soi dogs are a nuisance, though given the size and original purpose of ridgebacks, i am sure they will hold their own! the ones who aren't terrified to the core of my dog love her to bits!

anyway...if you have any specific questions or just want to swap cutesy dog photos, drop me a line.
