Hi,

I'm thinking of visiting Morelia and Queretaro on my visit to Mexico in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know of schools in those cities?

Visiting from the US trying to get my foot in the door to teach. I have a B.A. and a Cambridge CELTA.

There are lots of schools in Morelia and jobs can be found usually by cold calling. With your qualifications you should have little trouble finding work in a language school. If you can tell me what kind of school you are looking for I can probably come up with some contacts or school names for you.

I prefer teaching adults. However, I would look at all schools. To me the atmosphere and the support for teachers is most important.

In that case I would just start with a copy of the yellow pages and strong walking legs. There are literally schools all over town that would have adult classes. As far as support do you mean emotional or in regards to supplies and resources? There are schools that will supply you with nothing more than a grammar book and a pen but have great staff. From what I found when I taught there you could pretty much tell what type of school you were getting into as soon as you walked in. Go to the school, find some teachers, and just ask them what they think. Worked for me.

If you have some time before you go, you can narrow down a list by searching on-line in advance. If you like what you see, you can even contact the school to see if they need teachers and maybe even make arrangements to meet when you are there. Of course, it's probably more fun to just wander the streets!

These should get you started - most teach both spanish and english but be sure to double check!

Does anyone have experience living in Morelia? What is it like as a place to live? Are jobs really as easy to come by as earlier posters have implied? I have a BJ, TEFL and a year's experience in Mexico.

Doing some research for jobs for next year...thanks for your help!

I've been to Morelia a few times, mostly while traveling between Guadalajara and Lake Patzcuaro. Not the most exciting city in the world but I imagine that it would be a good place to make a transition to Mexican life. Low crime, friendly people, etc.

I lived in Morelia for seven months last year, but I didn't work while I was there, I was on leave, being a mom. I really liked living there. Its a colonial city, but it struck me as a real living-working city, rather than as a museum like Oaxaca City or Guanajuato. There are loads of great places within reach for weekend or day trips, and the climate is agreeable. It also has all the modern conviences if you're looking for that sort of thing.

I was very busy with my twins so I didn't do anything teaching related there. If I judge just from listening to the radio! There are loads of English schools. All the national chains seemed to be represented, plus a lot of independent schools. There were also lots of K-12 schools advertizing bilingual programs so if you want to teach kids that's probably an option as well. There are also many universities.

I'd definately consider going back to Morelia in the future. (but I have Oaxaca in my blood!)

I just bought a one-way ticket for Morelia, leaving the US on 3/16. I plan to hit the pavement with my resume when I get there, so I'll report back on what the TESL market looks like. I'm a little worried it is too late in the year for finding a job this semester.

Melee and anyone else, do you have info' on the cost of living in Morelia? esp. housing costs. are there open air markets selling fresh produce and meats and herbs in Morelia, or in the outlying villages?

anyone know anything about the villages nearby? livable for gringos? i don't need to be superfancy, but i do like flush toilets!

i'm thinking of hanging out in Mexico for a few months before getting down to the business of CELTA and jobs; time to unwind; my current work is quite stressful; i'm hearing that Mexico City can be pricey for rent, so i may not go to MCity/Tepo at first; i still want to be within a 4 hour drive of my family in Tepo the first year

gotta be better than Pachuca, si?

Check out Lake Patzcuaro, not far from Morelia. There is a gringo population there, moreso than in Morelia. It would be a good place to get your bearings and do some exploring for a few months.

i'm avoiding places like San Miguel de Allende or Lake Chapala; that's way too gringo for me

i do want flush toilets and running water, and i'd like to get to know some of the local people

Guy mentioned Cuatlua [south of Cuernavaca] in a previous post and other villages in that area; that's the kind of thing i have in mind as a homebase for a while, for the area around Morelia and Queretaro, if y'all know of anything
