How much can a moderately qualified greenhorn expect to bring in monthly in a city like Bangkok? By next fall I will have a four-year degree in Political Science, a Minor in English, a CELTA, and 1 1/2 years experience working as a part-time English/Math tutor for America Reads America Counts. Will I have enough on my resume to pull down 40k baht per month? |

What is the best time of year for finding the highest salaries? I was planning on heading to Bangkok in August/September to get my CELTA - is that a good timeline to be working with?
Furthermore, can a solid first impression, dress, and looks make a solid difference in salary offers? Also, is it possible for a person with my qualifications to get work at an International School?
Thanks for all the advice. |

Not really.
Teachers in Thailand are expected to smile, dress well and smell good on a daily basis.
Looking sharp might land you a job over an equally qualified candidate who looks (or smells) like crap,
but I would not go so far as to say it will make a "solid" difference in the salary on offer.
It might make a small difference, but ...
schools have strict budget & salary guidelines,
and couldn't move too much even if they wanted to.

There are 2 kinds of international schools in Thailand:
A. the accredited international schools, which are listed here: http://isat.or.th/home.asp
and
B. those that are not accredited, but use the name 'international' to boost their image
Imho - you are qualified for group B but not for group A.
Among the group B international schools, you can
still pull down 40 to 50K, which is good.
At the accredited international schools,
hiring is done BEFORE you arrive in Thailand,
and salaries start around 70K plus benefits.
They generally want a BEd and a teacher's qualification
from your home country (a PGCE or a State DOE certification)
and usually stipulate a minimum of 2 years of experience.
Having a CELTA is definitely a feather in your cap, but not
equal to a PGCE or a teacher's license issued by a DOE.
Keep in mind that international schools often require you
to teach subjects other than English. Math, science, etc ...
which is one reason why the hiring requirements are more rigid.
The other reason has to do with maintaining their official accreditation.
If a group A international school hires teachers who aren't state certified,
they risk losing their accreditation, and thus become a group B school.

Here is the general breakdown of academic semesters for most schools,
although hiring is ongoing - since people tend to move around a bit here:
Semester 1 - from May to September
Semester 2 - from October to February
PS:
You'd also be qualified to teach at any of the government schools,
and the better ones are now offering between 36 and 40K, fyi ...
