I have recently been placed in Nagoya with Nova and am leaving June 7. From everything I've heard, its not the most exciting city and I am not thrilled to be moving there.
Kind of random but I thought you guys might be able to change my mind, pump me up about Nagoya... any insight, humor, etc.
Thank you all. |

If you compare Nagoya to other major cities in terms of culture, nightlife, nature, food, amusement, etc..., it'll rank higher in some categories and lower in others. Relax, it's in a region rich in culture and history, lots of conveniences, and you can get out to nature fairly quickly. Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara are not too far so you can easily make a day trip to any one of them. Lots of people who come to Japan to work for eikaiwa companies (including NOVA) get placed in much smaller cities and sometimes even towns or villages that are as boring as hell. For your first placement, consider yourself lucky. You're going to a major city. After a year, you can always request to be transferred. |

I dont live in there but i have passed through it on a few occasions. It has a lot going for it. Not a jungle like Tokyo, close to mountains and skiing. Brand new international airport. Osaka is UGLY.
Nagoya was done up because of the 6 month Expo which was very successful. pretty big expat community and good restaurants. Maruzen bookstore and its got a booming economy compared to Tokyo and Osaka.
People are not as snobby as in Kyoto. |

Nagoya is one of the largest cities in Japan! (iirc, it's the 4th largest) If you are an urban type, you've pretty much got it made. Just think how bad it would be if you were placed in some rural backwater! (Then again, if you are a rural type, the countryside is just a short train ride away... )
As far as access goes, it's got an airport and is a major stop on the Shinkansen line. Daytrips to Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto anyone? |

i don't think you have to wait a full year to ask for a transfer. and yeah -- as above -- you might like it a lot. |
