Working for the KTC peppy kids club, I will be assigned an apartment, meaning that although I am saved the hassle of dealing with the language barrier, key deposits, etc, I don't have much of a choice in where I stay.

Does anybody have any information as to the accessibility of the internet at home? I use it for a great deal of things, and with the large amounts of data/programs/games/etc that I use, I don't think internet cafes will be sufficient for my needs.

Based on others' experience, is home internet access common and/or affordable at this point in time? More specifically, is KTC good about providing apartments compatible with internet?

A KTC peppy kids employee just came into my office asking for help setting up her internet today. It appears in her situation at least they have to get the internet service on their own. However, this shouldn't be a problem since YahooBB and other companies reach practically everywhere in Japan

Neat. Is that high speed internet, or 56K type stuff? Any word on the bandwidth allowance, if any?

Edit: Uhh... Never mind. Apparently BB stands for Broadband, so I'm guessing it's high speed, heh. ^_^;

I, as well as a few other PKC teachers in my area, live in Leopalace apartments, which have free internet access. So you might get lucky...

I had the same concern as you Corvin. Don't worry about it at all, you will get an apartment that will be Internet capable as long as you can get a land line. Just a bit of advice, wait for a special offer at a mall or a Yodaboshi (sp?) Camera store. I was able to get 5000 Yen off of my iPod for free simply by signing up at the mall instead of online. You can also get the first two months free quite easily. Oh and time it properly as well. It will take approximately 3-7 weeks to set up your access. Also you will get varying speeds depending on the location of your apartment. That is for YahooBB, not sure about other providers.

7 weeks sure is a long time... Wonder why it takes so long...? Oh well.

Mall or camera store, eh? Yeah, I've noticed that sometimes I see "Rogers Wireless" or the local internet company setting up booths. However, $50 off an iPod, I like the sound of that! However, I probably wouldn't want to wait TOO long for such services, since I need to keep in touch with friends by email and chat. As for the "varying speeds" you mentioned... What sort of variety are we talking here? Are we talking like, massive lag spikes every few minutes, or just the occasional "slow days" that reliable companies often have?

Also, I'm bringing my own computer with me. It's a desktop, but it's got this nice half-size case with a handle, shaped more like a cube than a rectangle.... Well, whatever. Has anybody found north american electronics to be any problem in Japan, in terms of compatibility? I know that I would need to buy a 2-prong adapter, but is that enough?

Before you do anything anyone has mentioned here check to see that your mansion/apartment does not have an internet provider already hard wired right into your building.

If they do then you will save yourself the long wait that will come with outside internet providers coming into your building solely for you and a bunch of cash for a faster connection.

Most new mansions/apartments have a deal with certain internet providers, for example, mine was Flett's, and I paid 2,100yen a month for an internet connection speed that Yahoo BB wanted to charge me 8,000yen a month for.

Basically the more ppl in your apartment/mansion that use the provider supplied by the apartment/mansion = the lower the cost of internet.

My internet price started at 2,100yen per month, and when I left that mansion it was at 1,800yen per month.

Usually a pamphlet will be available near the entrance of your building from the internet provider outlining the details.

Good luck.
