Hi
I have heard the bad stories about the escs school in tarnow. i know to avoid it like the plague, but has anyone taught in other good schools in the city? or primary or secondary schools? what is tarnow like to live in? i have been there 3 times on holiday but only for 2 weeks at a time in summer and winter so i know what the weather is like. What about teaching in Zakopane(year round ) or other towns close to there. ideally i would like to live in Poland, maybe Tarnow or a town closer to Zakopane ... any help appreciated........

Hey,
I don't know anything about Tarnow but I'm fairly certain it is impossible, or nearly, to get a job teaching English in Zakopane unless you went to a high school or something. I think that there may be one private English school there but I'm sure that competition for a touristy place like that is stiff.
Check out the Silesia area if you want to be close to the mountains--there are tons of private schools and Universities. I live in Lodz and think that its a great city--the smaller towns tend to be a bit boring but you can easily make friends if you make a little bit of an effort. |

cheers josh......... people in lodz tend to be nice, have met some before. yeah, want to be as close to the mountains as possible. Here's hoping with the eu, there will be more demand for english teachers in the tourist areas as more westerners are choosing to travel to Polska. |

I know Tarnow pretty well and really wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't already have a network of friends or family there. Unlike Silesia, Tarnow is an economically depressed area, that does not have an abundance of native speakers working at private schools.
The city doesn't have much in terms of social life. There are a few nice bars in the main market square and one or two small, old movie theatres. The only saving grace is that there are always trains heading to Krakow and there is a train that goes to Slovakia and Hungary which stops in Tarnow.
I would really recommend heading to Krakow because you have a better chance of getting a job, meeting people and there are tons of buses down to Zakopane. If you don't want to go to Krakow, I hear Nowy Targ is really growing recently and that's close to Zakopane. There's also Bielsko-Biale which could be an option, but I'm not sure if that's an easy trek to Zakopane. |

Hello,
Why don't you just move to Cracow? It is only an hour from Zakopane. Besides there are over 100 schools here so you'll find a job sooner or later.
I have met people living here who go to Zakopane every weekend.
I have friends from Tarnow, who now live here, and they have no desire to go back. What's the attraction in Tarnow?

Hi, thanks for your help, my boyfriend comes from and a lot of his family, parents, cousins etc who i have met live in and around Tarnow. He is studying with me in the Uk, i know he wants to go back there to live, at the same time he thinks Krakow is a great city and magical. He probably would live there. He is crazy about the mountains like me! Yes i know Nowy Sacz, we have driven through it going to Zakopane, seems nice, i have been slagged for pronouncing it badly!! i have noticed that there are not many native speakers there, i struggled in shops etc when my boyfriend was not with me, i just got by on my basic Polish... i know that i want to do my CELTA in krakow or wroclaw and then i assume if all goes well, i'll be looking for work around krakow. cheers! |

If you like mountains then think about Bielsko-Biala. It's nice(ish) and close to the mountains.
The problem with Krakow is that it's a really nice place and employers factor that into your wages. Plus the competition for jobs is far more intense than anywhere else in Poland. Here in Warsaw there is virtually no competition for work, at peak times there is far more work than teachers. Means higher pay and better treatment by bosses (if they don't treat you well then you can just walk out and find other work). |

I am wondering about the quality of this teaching course Tarnow Poland called ESCS? I have seen some posts in the past about this school. I am want to see if anyone has been there for instruction recently. |

I don't know anything about Tarnow, but I do know that I've never heard anything good about ESCS.
By the way did you read the OP's original post? |
