If anyone is seriously considering or is being considered for a position in the Emirates I strongly recommend that the salary not be looked at as money in the bank.
Research the accomodations packages. Since 2004, rents have risen by 50% while allowances have not.
Today's Gulf News
http://gulfnews.com/nation/Society/10025827.html provides recent the stats.
Often residencies (furnished flats providing in-house services) are still within the accomodation allowance but too often these convenient options are disallowed.
I like my current post. I would like to remain in it for some time. Life in the UAE has, for me, more plusses than minuses.
However, at the same time, I am unwilling to shell out 2 - 3 months salary in order to subsidise the insufficient accomodation allowance and I am currently looking for a position in this country or elsewhere which provides housing. |

... unless the housing is included within the package ... that is ... as others have pointed out ... and as Capricorny himself / herself later goes on to 'qualify' ...

It's not all doom on the economic front ... after a ding-dong six months which saw the price of a packet of 24 Weetabix fluctuate almost weekly by as much as 25% ... you can now pick up a pack for what it used to cost ... in fact there was a 50% extra free offer running in most stores last month |
