Hey guys....
I've learned a few lessons about working in Taiwan without a degree, and I am posting this so that others don't make the same mistakes I do.
I've been here for about 2 months, and am pretty sure I'm heading home in the next week.
Despite what others might say, it is perfectly legal to work here without a degree - as long as you have a college diploma and a TEFL. I have both, got a job at a Buxiban and was doing quite well...
UNTIL! My work visa application got rejected! Why? Because the government didn't have any record of my school existing. They required a grades transcript from my school. Thanks to some wheeling and dealing (and some luck), I was able to convince the registrar to send me the transcript the next day (instead of the 7 days it normally takes). This was faxed off to the government, and all was well.
Unfortunatley - because of the delay, my work permit will not be arriving in time for my visitor visa's expiry date. It can't be extended, and I can't afford to go on a visa run. So, my friends, is the end of the road.
So - take my advice... if you are going to be working here without a degree, MAKE SURE YOU SUBMIT AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT FROM YOUR SCHOOL WITH COPIES OF YOUR DIPLOMA AND TEFL!!
Just some friendly advice from a friend who has taken much but given little to this forum.

Do you want to stay? You are giving up way too easy, imho. I may be missing something here, but you are not in any danger of having to return. You could get a letter from your school swearing to the fact that your work permit is being processed, take that and a much more contrite attitude to the FAP and get an extension.
Or, come up with the 4000NT and take the boat gambling cruise as a visa run.
You kids. Y'all give up too easy. |

It's a pretty clear write-up and all but I also am thinking you should give it a second try. You mentioned that you can't cover the cost for another visa-run. How about scrape by however you can, ask the school you're at for a small trip fare. Take it further and bring in a suitcase full of your stuff, maybe some electronics and let them hold it as collateral(?)
Quick question. You said submit official transcripts and copies of Diploma and TEFL are ok. Can the offical transcripts be hand carried (by you) in the college's sealed envelope, or only sent to gov't directly by mail? |

That does sound strange I have never heard them asking for transcripts and I have been here for years, it doesn't sound like it is the end of the road by any means you are qualified, it's just a matter of finishing the task, I would say most schools would spot the cash for a visa run as well. |

Hey
Actually your 75% finished......wait for the papers from the CLA and just over stay your visa....with papers in hand go to the closest FAP and show them your passport...the papers from the CLA....your flight itineary(gonna have to go to a third country or the 'magic boat ride' and a typed letter explaining why you overstayed whilst waiting for the CLA papers...be polite and smile and they will stamp your passport with a 1000nt fine and the date you must leave....way you go out and they will issue the residency visa in the third country you go to......done this for several dozens of people..never a problem

I think that this has been established a number of times on this forum. You can technically do this but there are two problems as I see it aside from the problem that you encountered:
1. Some schools may not recognize the fact that you can be legally employed with anything less than a degree and therefore you may find difficulties landing a job in the first place. Additionally most schools have a preference for applicants with degrees as it makes their teachers more marketable to students. Teachers without degrees are at a distinct disadvantage here especially in the current competitive market. Well done Bryan for finding a school that was willing to go to bat for you!
2. My biggest concern relates to the question as to what constitues a college diploma in the eyes of the Taiwan government and which institutions are accepted by the government here? The same question holds true for the TEFL qualifications. There are so many players out there that I am curious as to which ones the government accepts and which ones it doesn't. Bryan maybe you could let us know which institutions were relevant to your case. |

Competitive? All's I see is the illegal teachers leaving. Taiwan's about to experience a real shortage in Teachers...
Disadvantage? Why? They don't know the difference between a degree and a diploma. If you show your potential emplyer that you have 2 diplomas 1. College 2. TEFL they'll respect that!

To find oot "what consitutes a college diploma" the Ministry of Education here just checks the website of the Ministry of Education back in your home coutry. Here's an example for Ontario, Canada

Yeah. What PopFly said.
By the way, I think working here so long has melted my brain or something, so sorry for the dumb question: what's the difference between a degree and a diploma?
