I was wondering....for those of you that are possibly going to Krakow, would you like to form some sort of a network so that when we get to Krakow, we at least know someone? I'm really excited to go however, I wouldn't mind making friends before hand. It is kind of scary to leave your home country and enter someone else's for a year or even longer. Let me know how you all feel.
I'm planning on being there in late August, early September because I am planning on traveling a bit ) |

that all depends if you're a fit lass.....
Seriously though I'll be over end of August looking for work. I spent the last academic year getting boozed up in Krakow at UJ and meeting the ball and chain. So if you want to catch up my email address is [email protected] drop me an email closer to the time, or alternatively if you want to pick my brains i've researched the whole teaching in krakow thing quite extensively so might be able to you out on general living queries - i'll have no idea on visas and the like you'll have to search this forum |

Hey Simon,
Glad you met your ball and chain (not too sure what to think about that comment).....not happy?
So you are going to Krakow at the end of August. Great! Where are you going to be looking for work if you don't mind me asking. |

I should confess that I am perfectly happy with the other half, the better half. Any derogatory remark made is typical British humour and should be taken as such (she's reading over my shoulder you know).
Back to topic though, have not thought too much about what school yet. I shall leave research of school until August. I figure that what advice offered on the board i.e.
Good schools don't advertise on the net
They won't offer as good money as privately sourced jobs
Neediness appeal - they advertise, lots of people apply and then they get the upper hand when it comes to bargaining about wage/working hours etc
is good advice. So I'll arm myself with an English CV, a Polish CV plenty of nice smelling aftershave and rubbish but effective chat up lines to impress the female DoS's and get myself a good position somewhere.
Having experienced Polish life, and this will sound horrible, but acting like you've come out of some 1950's corny american love film works a treat for getting your own way. |

Glad to hear that you are happy! I understand what ball and chain means and it is normally viewed as a negative remark, at least to Americans. Unless you are talking amongst friends/family I wouldn't refer to her like that....at least I wouldn't like it if my boyfriend/husband referred to me on a forum. But what do I know except for things that I would/wouldn't like
I actually have a lead in Krakow for a job and I will find out later this week or the early part of next week, so cross your fingers! If that doesn't workout then off to Bydgoszcz I go. I actaually know someone who lives there and I will stay with his parents until I find a job. I'm wondering how I go about finding these jobs that aren't advertising online. I'm not sure how to go about this type of thing because I've never done it before let alone leaving my country. All is a new experience.
Haha....so you are saying being more on the flirty side and I'll get things to go my way? I'll keep that in mind! |

Good schools often advertise on the net. Even the British Council do it. It's a good way of finding people at short notice. Word of mouth is often ok, but some of the best people I've recruited have come through tefl.com, this site and Polang, and some of the most reputable schools in Poland use online vacancies boards.
Time was, that schools used recruiters in UK/US, but the fees are high, and they tend to send anyone who comes along, just to make their commission. Real nutters sometimes.
Just arriving at the door of a language school can work, especially if they're suddenly stuck for a teacher, but frankly most of the people who've done that here are desperate for work and have tried everywhere, and I'd rather find someone through a formal advert. It is more a sign of neediness than replying to an online ad.
Mailshotting schools with CVs can work also - as long as the cv doesn't come across as too pushy. |

I stand corrected and thank you for setting me straight. Looks like I'll have to amend my job searching plan accordingly.
Is it worth sending CV's by email in July/August to schools?
Can we find out salary details by email? Do schools like giving out this info?
Any other hints and tips would be gratefully received |

Bialonoz, is that www.polang.com? I've tried their website and can't find any jobs advertised. I would be interested in any other Poland specific tefl recruitment websites you can recommend.
Thanks

"Some" good schools advertize on the net, but not all. In Cracow the best way to get a good job is by being there. Because when there's an opening at a good school the opportunity will usually only for a few days as some people at other schools are willing to quit their jobs for a better paying one. Who can blame them?
I haven't work in Warsaw, but in Cracow I have noticed that the "lesser" schools were usually looking for teachers on the net where most schools didn't have to bother.
Secondly the British Council doesn't hire North Americans. |

It's funny you say that because I could never date an English bird because of the way they talk.
Unfortunately TEFL has some bad habits, as I now associate the English female register with arrogance due to my experience of being around female Polish English students, female Polish English teachers and female English English teachers. (But I know it's foolish.)
The truth is there is nothing special about British English. It's simply the English is used in Britian. But all English is from Britian.
Just as you have a lot of different accents in London there are different accents around the world.
If you watch Little Britian and go to Britian you will see that Brits make just as many "mistakes" as Americans do and have just as much slang. I know I was just there in January.
In fact there are professors that argue that Shakespheare's English is much closer to the American tradition.
For example, if you read Shakesphere you will find "gotten" as the third form of get. Except in the case of have got, but "have got" is the British variant of the simple present of "to have."
The main difference is that in different "forms" of English some people have choose one word for two things and some have choosen two words for two things.
For example in the States bathroom means bathroom and toilet. We have one word for two things. Where as in Britian you say torch when you mean to say flashlight. Again one word for two things.
(Yawn.)
Alright, I'm off my soap box and bored with by my own words. Sorry but I'm surrounded by Brits at my present school so I usually have to give this speech every few weeks in an attempt to save my job. No thanks to the British council.
(I think it's time I looked for another school.)
BTW Paul, there are schools in Asia that make Brits speak with American accents, you should try it if things don't work out in Poland.

Americans are deff friendly compared with British, or englishman anyway lol. Example for any yank or other foreigner or english guy to ask directions in london underground say the answer thier get msot likely is a humble **beep* off* or just ignored, where new york with my experience was *hey guys you want some help* which I though was damn decent. |
