I'm considering taking my (small/medium-sized) dog with me when I move to Japan. Does anyone know what the quarantine laws are? Do people ever bring their pets with them? Are apartment owners usually dog-friendly? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

No. and I mean really, no. Gaijin and pet = almost impossible to accommodate. You might be lucky, if you are being transferred by your company overseas then its easier (their responsibility) but I imagine with a teaching English job, your Eikawa company won't help you with a pet.

http://www.maff-aqs.go.jp/english/index.htm is the official site. Try any combination of "pet japan immigration" in Google for personal anecdotes. Also, consider the quarrantine period going back to your home country. For example, from Australia to Japan you could potentially have Fido free of immigration overnight, but back from Japan to Australia there would be a 3-6 month confinement at Quarrantine.
Do you really need to bring Fido over? Life in a small, dimly lit apartment is not the most ideal environment for a social animal like a dog. The lack of parks and green space where Spot can run are sorely lacking, particularly in the big cities. Think of your dog, not you...harsh perhaps, but I had the same dilemma in coming to Japan.
Good luck. |

Thanks for the feedback. No, I don't have to bring the pup over. I was not originally intending to. I was just feeling around to see if it was plausible. Thank you to both of you for the info. |
