Does anyone know of any good companies to work for in the summer months (July and August)? I am a certified teacher and would really like to go somewhere this summer to teach but I am having trouble finding companies offering such employment. Do any of you have recommendations? I am willing to go just about anywhere. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks!!! |

If you want to go to China, there are many summer teaching opportunities. The problem is that most have not started to advertise yet. Most schools don't like to advertise this far in advance. Most of the camps are for July and August. You could try working at ALV summer camp. They have advertised on Dave's. They provide a hotel room and 3 meals a day. |

There's an ad currently posted on www.tefl.com for summer camps in Spain.

Hmmm.... I checked out tesl.com but most of them require you to have an EU passport. One position looks hopeful though! As for the TESL Ontario... they didn't seem to have any summer positions posted. I'll keep looking. Let me know if you have any other thoughts.
Thanks! |

Google Canadian International Student Services. They offer numerous camps with ESL programs. I worked at one about 5 years ago. Very nice place to work. |

Two things that I'm surprised have not come up in this discussion.
Visas. Just how are you going to get sponsored for a visa if you intent to work only 2 months?
Breaking even on costs. Unless you find someone to pay for your rent and airfare, you are likely not to break even. |

Two very important issues!
I did a summer program in China a few years back (through the US-China Educational Exchange or something... most people recommend steering clear of recruiters, and I do, too, but for a short-term program it's OK). They arranged the visa for me. For short-term programs, you've got to make sure they've got some way to get you over there. And if they know you're only coming for a month or so, they should be prepared to help you get there legally!
As for costs... Yes, you have to deal with the fact that you might actually lose money. I got a salary + room and board in China, but the cost of the airfare alone was more than all of that. I went there knowing that I would lose money. Basically I looked at it as a working vacation.

tefl.com has a great many listings but most are for the EU which I imagine wouldn't help you. Are there other sites which focus on summer work? |

My son went to Taiwan for three summers to teach at summer camps. He was paid a small stipend, air tickets were purchased for him, and he stayed with local teachers or in a dormitory. He also taught one summer at a camp in Korea with stipend, housing, and airfare paid. He found all these camps through his university. When I was doing my TESOL the students were offered the opportunity to teach at Spring Break camps or summer camps in Japan with most costs paid. Many English camps and summer schools contract directly with particular colleges and universities to recruit teachers. I recommend that you get in touch with your local institutions of higher learning to see what might be available. Good luck to you!

Do you happen to know any of the companies that your son worked for? I would really love it if my airfare and accomodations were taken care of. I'm not looking to make a profit. I'll check with the university and also the board of education that I work for. Thanks! If anyone else knows of some good companies please let me know.
Much appreciated!!! |

So you were here on a student visa already, is that right? Student visas permit PT work. To come here (Japan) cold is not going to give you such an opportunity. |

Glenski, You can get visas for short term work in both China and Korea. Korea offers C4 visas for short term work like summer camps. They pay $2,000 US for one month of work. Most of the camps provide room and board. If you look on Dave's in a month you should see some advertisements for these camps. |
