Here's my situation:

I was recently offered a job as an assistant teacher in Valencia, Spain. Although I am certified as a teacher, I do not have a EU passport (I'm from Canada). I believe that I am going to accept this position, because I understand that it would be extremely hard to find a teaching position when I get there (which would be my ideal situation). As an assistant, the pay is considerably less than a teacher's would be.

Can anyony help me out with cost-of-living expenses. Would I be able to live and travel (throughout Europe) on under $15K/year (Euros)? How likely would I be to find a teaching position in Valencia, upon arrival (if I didn't accept this position)? (BTW- I do no speak a word of Spanish).

any help is greatly appreciated,
thanks,

AJ

25000 euros a year? That's actually very good money for a tefl teacher in Spain.

If the position you've been offered includes legal working papers, it's a very rare bird and you should grab it right away.

If you just go to Spain and start hunting for something, chances are 99% that you will be working illegally. There is a recent, long thread on this forum discussing problems with working illegally.

Just remember that Valencia isn't Madrid or Barcelona. It is much smaller and there are always enough legal teachers so that in general schools don't hire from outside the EU. I have been in Valencia nearly 3 years and have never met a non-EU teacher.

If you have an offer and you want to come to Valencia your best option is to accept it. If it really is for $25,000 a year tell me where it is and I'll apply for it as well. On that salary you will probably be the best paid teacher here. Normal full-time work will earn you two-thirds of the figure you quote.

oops....it's amazing how one little slip-up can equal a huge impact on your question. My salary isn't 25k/year, but 15k/year euros! (what's 10,000 euros Smile!!)

So, on that note, what's your thoughts on living on this salary in Valencia?
