I have a Tesol Cert and a PGCE(FE) History along with 20 years experience; I have been told that I need a Diploma to be a Head/Director of Studies in the UK. Is this correct?

The simple answer to your question is "yes" if you want to get a job as a director of studies at a British Council-accredited school no matter where in the world it is located, not just the United Kingdom.

I don't think the British Council "accredits" schools outside of the UK, does it? Apart from their own centres, I mean. I can't ever recall seeing any school outside the UK claiming British Council "accreditation", the value of which would have very limited currency anyway (for a variety of reasons).

Slagdog, I believe that it is necessary to hold some sort of EFL Diploma to get a DoS job at an accredited school in the UK.

Meanwhile, you can find some interesting stuff about the British Council's accreditation scheme and how it discriminates against (i.e., ignores) EFL teachers here:

Thank you for those links; yes the BC has earned a deserved reputation as an incompetent and arrogant organization.
