I want to obtain TEFL certification some time within the next six months and I would be interested to hear others' informed opinions about various programs. If possible, I would like to stay in China to do it.
I am doing this for professional development so the quality of the program is my biggest concern...but I would be lying if I said cost hadn't crossed my mind. I have looked at a program in Zhuhai and the price tag is around 1500 U.S. dollars...is this typical for a quality program? |

I have a better idea: English Schools Foundation, Hong Kong, advertised
"Interested in a career English teaching?"
You can do a 4-week course and obtain a 'Certificate in Teraching English to Speakers of Other anguages'.
I do not know how good this course is, but the ESF is one of HK's oldest education facilities, founded by British, and still teaching wealthy expat and CHinese kids. THis certificate is a spin-off that no doubt gives you at least as good a grounding in TEFL as that other course.
Unfortunately, the course begins on 21 July and is probably already booked out.
ESF have a we3bsite, www.edservices.org.hk
(but when I tried to access it I was unsuccessful).
If you are in HK, call them at 27 11 28 01
I would be curious to know of others' opin ion on this programme! |

The Cambridge CELTA is the most internationally well-known of the certificates, I've discovered through research. Trinity TESOL comes in close behind. I'm doing a CELTA right now, and the training is very structured and grammar-focused. It's not the ideal teaching method that matched with my past experience, but I am learning useful skills.
The alternative is to try the many 'lesser known' TEFL certificates, which exist in abundance out there. Many colleges, language schools, training centres, etc. offer short one month generic TEFL certs, with all kinds of different teaching styles, usually according to the place that offers it. Bear in mind though, that not all employers recognize lesser known certificates. The CELTA, for example, may be highly structured, but it's simply recognized more than other certificates, so that helps withi future.
