i have a master's in social work, a 4 week tefl certificate, i'm 50 but if i may say so myself i look younger than that, i tend to interview well, and i'm enthusiastic because i really do love teaching english. do you think i can just come with no job and get one before spending $2000 or so? did any of you do that?
oh, and i like workign with all ages BUT i don't want to teach more than 25 hours or so a week. |

You can get a job very easily. The best place to look is the ajarn.com jobs board; there's no point looking for work before you're in the country, but once there you should be able to get something in a couple of weeks (although you're unlikely to be paid for another month after that). Obviously the longer you can afford to wait, the more choice you will have. |

As unis, elementary and high schools start up in May, now is a pretty good time to find a job in Thailand. I think you'd have an offer or two within a week of starting your search.
I arrived there in Oct 99, no previous experience, no CELTA -- had 3 solid offers my first week there. Spent maybe 1200 bucks before I got my first paycheck.
Keep in mind that most Thai schools won't hire you sight unseen or recruit from abroad -- but the ones that do might offer a better package; higher pay, housing, etc. |
