i checked with the irs and i don't have to pay taxes on the money i earn when i'm overseas. but i keep hearing something about 2 years or 3 years. is there some tax advantage to staying less than that? do i get the taxes i paid in japan back if i leave that soon? does it work to just move to another country and teach efl for a couple of years and then move back to japan?
thanks! |

Mary, you dont get your taxes back if you work 2-3 years in japan. You might get a refund if you file a return but all foreigners have to pay income tax here if they work a full year.
You might also get a pension refund if you are enrolled in the national pension plan. |

Who told you this? It's wrong. Trust a fellow American who has lived in Japan much longer than that.

I think you are confusing things here. Paying taxes in Japan is much like paying US taxes in the USA. You get a refund or not at the time that you file.
You can get back national health insurance payments up to about 3 years (but you won't get 100% of them). Or is that pension, Paul? I'm sorry, but I'm very busy and can't recall. |

You dont get health insurance premiums back but the national pension premiums. The rates have now changed and if you are here a year you get 0.4 of one months average salary and if you are here 36 months (3 years) you get back 2.4 months average salary. The govt also takes off 20% in taxation (its no longer pension but earned income) but you can claim this deduction back after you leave the country. |
