|

Does anyone have an approximate statistical breakdown of English teachers in Japan in regards to type of jobs and / or salaries? In other words, what percentage of the teachers work at eikaiwas, elementary / junior high / high schools, universities, corporations, and other places like test-prep etc.? What is the approximate breakdown? What would you say the average salary of a teacher in Tokyo is these days? What is the mean salary? How much rent do most teachers pay monthly and what are their salaries?
Any comments? |

There are literally thousands of such businesses and schools in japan and no one keeps records on how many schools there are and how many employees there are. there are something like 700 universities in Japan with many having part time and full time employees. there is a regular turnover of staff each year and many now are outsourcing to private companies.
There are said to be about 30,000 foreigners teaching in Japan of which in my guesstimate about 10-12,000 teach on JET the big 4 language schools, 4000 at NOVA. 4000-6000 on JET (not all are English teachers but CIRs and SEAs). A couple of thousand full time university teachers and many thousands of part timers (some universities have up to 100 part timers). My one has about a dozen foreign part time English teachers. You have non-native speakers also teaching English and their native language as well.

Teachers can range anything from part timers teaching infants at a kindergarten to full time university professors. the salary range is vast. It would be better to ask the salary of conversation school teachers, university teachers, part timers.
Mean and average are the same thing. Maybe you mean the "mode" which is the mid-point where 50% are above and 50% are below. No one knows that figure. rents also vary dependding on location and what they can afford, size of their apartment. The average conversation school teacher pays between 50-70,000 yen a month in rent, or about 15-20% of his or her salary.
Salaries are anything between 180-300,000 yen a month and more dependng on one's job (s). |

An average is subset of the means, namely the arithmetic mean. A mode is the most common value in a set of values. If you have 10 blondes, 20 brunettes and a redhead, the brunettes are the mode. What you described as a mode is actually the median. |

Anyway, whatever results you get, Im not exactly sure what difference it will make to the individual, for if they come here and work, depending on the company they could be anywhere along the income spectrum or work for one of many of the different kinds of employers and employment categories.
Doesnt really help one make an informed choice does it (though thats not what he was implying, though) |

I wonder how many teachers work directly for a school, as opposed to having a middleman hire and farm the teachers out. |

Statistically most English teachers do not break down; although many do and many more come close to doing so. |
