I am thinking of moving to China and my Ecuadorian girlfriend/future wife
teaches Spanish but we are unsure of any opportunities for her to teach. Living on one teacher's salary might be tight and she prefers to work. Any ideas? Thank you. |

Not many ghopes in China for your Spanish-speaking partner, afraid, man! The most popular languages in China after English are:
- Japanese
- French
- German
I once met an Italian-speaking Chinese tour guide in Xi'an. His Italian certainly was better than my Mandarin!
Xi'an has a few colleges and universities where your girlfriend might succeed in finding a job. I do not know any other places, honestly!
In Guangdong, I would recommend the
Guangzhou University of Foreign Studies. They do have language programmes including French, Japanese and German; not sure about Spanish but if any uni in Guangdong has any Spanish on offer then it must be this uni!
You would love its beautiful campus, stylish architecture and great scenery beneath Baiyun mountain! |

| I work with one woman from Spain and one from Colombia. There are limited opportunities for Spanish speakers here in Shanghai - but there are opportunities, especially if your girlfriend also speaks reasonable English. I certainly wouldn't abandon all hope, but you might want to consider moving to one of the bigger, more cosmopolitan cities, and she also might want to consider other work such as customer service for a company that trades with Spanish speaking countries, voice recording etc |

you are somewhat off tangent with your iberophobic mind! Lots of CHinese migrated, legally and otherwise, to Spanish-speaking countries! Spanish is an international language! WHile touring Spain, I was amazed to note the high number of recent arrivals from China, all doing sedentary business in Madrid or Barcelona!
And, one of my English students is now a proud Honduran - of Guangdong stock!
SOme of the cleverest CHinese don't know English but speak German, Spanish, Russian or Arabic! |

How would anyone know? By the time anyone counted, speakers would have died and been born; it would be like saying 'there are more type x of tree in the world than any other', viz., meaningless. Anyway, what do you mean by 'spoken', and what do you mean by 'language'. Do you mean as a first (native, mother) tongue, or as a second or other language? What area of general linguistics is your PhD in exactly? |

Fine, then he won't have any problems getting a job teaching Spanish then, will he? (I won't be holding my breath.)

Bertrand, where outside of France and Quebec(where only a relatively small number people live) do people speak French - who have any money that is?
28 Spanish speaking countries that cover a lot of territory. It's easier to rape, pillage and plunder the natural resources, or just open a Chinese restaurant if you know the local vernacular. |

The 3 most commonly spoken Languages in the world
1) English
2) Spanish
3) French
It is irrelevant whether it is your first or tenth language. We are discussing the total number of people throughout the world who can speak a language.
Obviously this precludes Chinese ( as this is spoken predominately in the one country ).
If, I require a PHD to read and research information - ' God help me '. |

I don't know if they teach it, but someone should be able to point you in the right direction. One of my students told me she was taking Spanish lessons in the vacation-can't remember which student though to get the details.

Then how come you have not even thought about Arabic. No, you are right, one does not need a doctorate to lift dubious facts and figures from the Internet. If that is your idea of knowledge and research then fine, but we are having two entirely different conversations operating at different levels of abstraction.
