Hi All,
I'm planning on leaving to Portugal in the next couple of months (I'm in Canada right now) to teach. My question is any info on how I can transfer money back home? Or international banking? I was looking into Paypal but not sure if that will work. Any suggestions appreciated Very Happy
Cheers,
Miss Creoula

If you are planning to make enough money to send some home, get the "ABA Routing number" for your bank back home - before you leave. Your bank in Portugal will know what to do with it.

The ABA Routing number is found on a check so bring a check with you or open a checking account.

Thats the safest way to do it.

I've never heard of an ABA routing number - my bank (Royal Bank) gave me something called a SWIFT code. You also need the account number, branch number, and address of your branch. This has worked fine for me in two countries (Korea and India).

Also, you should check into regulations regarding sending money out of the country. Some countries limit the amount you can send out (in India it was 2/3 of your salary, and in Korea it's 100%). It's good to know this.

Take a very big suitcase, it's the only way you'll stop them taking commission for moving figures from one computer screen to another.
